Developing youth, strengthening communities, and building leaders through sports ministry

Why sports ministry? It’s a question we get asked often.

  • Sport is a bridge that can bring diverse communities/people together
  • Sport as a ministry is holistic in approach—developing valuable life skills while sharing Good News to people
  • Sport teaches emotional intelligence, social resilience, and sportsmanship (civility) in a world gone mad
  • Sport is universal—every tribe of people on the planet plays some kind of sport
  • Sport is a relatable tool for evangelism—even the Apostle Paul leveraged its cultural relevance
  • Sport naturally embodies a team spirit that is analogous to Jesus’ vision for the church (the body of Christ)
  • Sport has many parallels that illustrate spiritual truths/principles

Since our inception in 1995, sports ministry has always been a part of Breakaway’s approach to developing youth. It’s been invaluable to reaching the unreached, serving the marginalized, shaping cross-cultural partnerships, strengthening communities, and creating new pathways for discipleship among the next generation.

Sport is a universal language for Gospel reconciliation that can bring communities together—bridging cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic divides. Sports ministry teaches life skills for young people on and off the field, offering coaching/mentoring relationships, building character and resilience, fostering unity, and so much more!
