    2021 Updates: New Partnerships and Camp Venues

    We are entering our 15th year of facilitating life-changing adventure camps for under served children across East Tennessee, and we have some exciting new developments for 2021! This summer, Breakaway will be upgrading our flagship residential camp with a new venue in the Smoky Mountains (Tellico Plains area). Additionally, we will continue to expand our “micro camp” experiences that began in 2020, with a new partnership in Fairhope, Alabama, providing an overnight camping experience for under served children in the lower Alabama region. A couple of new sports day camps are also in the making, with a prospective baseball camp in Cleveland, Tennessee, and a basketball camp with some of our ministry partners near Ocala, Florida. We appreciate your prayers and support as we enter into a new season of expansion and opportunities to empower more youth and children through communities of faith, hope, and love.

    Coronavirus Updates: Ministry Postponements

    Breakaway’s Nascar KidVenturez weekend retreat in Bristol has been postponed. We will reschedule at a later date according to Nascar’s plans. Thank you Bristol Motor Speedway, Munsey Church, and Bristol Raceway Ministries for your partnership. #WeAreInThisTogether

    Due to Coronavirus, we will not be hosting the mission team from Belfast, Northern Ireland, in April. We look forward to when the team can come to Chattanooga and serve with us at a later date.     Join us for the Breakaway Super Bowl Party!

    Breakaway will be hosting a Super Bowl party on Sunday Feb 3, starting at 5:00pm. The invitation is extended to children, families, volunteers, and community partners. There will be fun, games, and fellowship for all ages (youth and adults), and of course the big game televised. We’d love to have you join us!     Servolution: Chattanooga Kids Giving Back

    Spring into action, Chattanooga! Servolution is a springtime initiative mobilizing youth and children to bring about a revolution of serving others through simple acts of kindness.

    Servolution is not just an event; it is a revolution of kindness fostered through serving. As we begin opening our hearts, hands, and time to serve, not only are we part of changing the lives of others, but we are also subject to the changing of our own lives. A beautiful perspective is found when we take the time to look around and seek opportunities to bless others in our community. We find ourselves being transformed by the idea of living beyond ourselves.

    Below are some ways that young people in your community can take initiative and join the movement in serving others.

    Community Outreach Ideas and Initiatives:

    • Assemble Easter baskets for children displaced due to domestic violence
    • Volunteer at a local food bank
    • Serve those in transitional living facilities
    • Visit/serve at a nursing home or assisted living community
    • Deliver lunch/dinner or baked goods to local police and fire departments
    • Spring cleanup—host a huge, fun, garage sale to benefit a local charity or cause
    • Organize an Easter bash for special needs kids
    • Do a sports/recreation event at an underserved neighborhood
    • Give out free bottled water and snacks at athletic events
    • Clean up a playground or park in the area
    • Do a home renovation project for the elderly or disabled
    • Bring free lunches to construction workers or servicemen in your area
    • Clean the yard of a single mom or widow
    • Give out free donuts and coffee at a bus stop or shopping center
    • Host a free car wash
    • Show appreciation to postal workers and shipping associates (UPS, FedEx, USPS) by visiting their centers and doing a reverse-delivery of goody bags
    • Throw a “Senior Prom” for a nursing home complete with live music, food, and decorations
    • Do a door-to-door grocery giveaway
    • Visit a children’s hospital and bring small gift items
    • Serve fresh coffee and snacks to staff and those waiting in the emergency room
    • Host a party for children in foster care
    • Throw a baby shower for an expectant mom through the local pregnancy center

    Christmas Hope: Thank You for Making a Difference!

    Thank you partners!

    It’s been a joy seeing the way God’s people have demonstrated such contagious generosity in serving the less fortunate in our communities this Christmas season = 560+ kids served with shoebox gifts in homeless and domestic violence shelters. 400+ juvenile inmates experiencing the gospel in word and deed. 100+ children of prisoners sponsored for gifts. 40+ Chattanooga area low-income families adopted for Christmas gifts. Dominican orphans and Haitian refugees experiencing God’s love in abundance. Thankful for all the volunteers and partners who make it possible. To God be all the glory and may many come to know the Prince of Peace through these indelible expressions of His love & kindness.

    Jesus reminded His disciples: “As you did it to one of the least of these… you did it to me.” (Matthew 25:40)

    #GivingTuesday: Save The Date

    #GivingTuesday date

    #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.

    The Amazing Race and “Summer of Hope” Banquet

    Join us for a fun and festive kick-off to our ‘Summer of Hope’ initiatives!

    Whether you choose to participate in both the Amazing Race scavenger hunt and the dinner banquet, or just come for the dinner banquet, your involvement will empower the lives of vulnerable children this summer.

    Proceeds from this event support our flagship adventure camp for at-risk kids, various summer programs for underprivileged youth, and Breakaway sports camps. Most significantly, your involvement will help us to impact the lives of more young people like Antwon (hear his ‘Breakaway’ story in this video).

    Festivities will begin with a city-wide “Amazing Race” event (scavenger hunt), then conclude with a dinner celebration featuring awards, Breakaway testimonies, and a ‘Summer of Hope’ preview.

    Chattanooga State Gifts Books to Children of Inmates

    Now in its fourth year, Chattanooga State’s Donald F. Andrews College Reading and Writing Center partnered with Breakaway Outreach to sponsor Operation Christmas Hope during the recent holiday season.

    Ninety-six books were gifted during a party for the children and their caregivers on Dec. 10 at Ooltewah United Methodist Church.

    Operation Christmas Hope gives children who have a parent in prison an opportunity to not only get toys and clothes for Christmas, but also to get the gift of learning with books.

    “As a parent who always gave my kids books, and read to my children daily, I feel it is important to pass this lifelong learning to other children that don’t necessarily have the same advantages as my children did,” said Event Coordinator Michele Hough, manager of the Reading and Writing Center.

    According to Ms. Hough, every child on the list received books that were purchased by faculty and staff at Chattanooga State Community College.

    Backpacks and After School Programs for Chattanooga Underserved Children

    Partner with Breakaway Outreach in helping hundreds of Chattanooga area inner-city students and underserved children get off to a great start this school year with backpacks and after school programs!

    Effective after school programs bring a wide range of benefits to youth, families and communities. After school programs can boost academic performance, reduce risky behaviors, promote physical health, and provide a safe, structured environment for the children of working parents.

    • Attending after school programs can improve students’ academic performance. A national evaluation found that over 40 percent of students attending 21st Century Community Learning Center programs improved their reading and math grades, and that those who attended more regularly were more likely to make gains (Naftzger et. al., 2007).
    • Effective after school programs can improve classroom behavior, school attendance, academic aspirations, and can reduce the likelihood that a student will drop out (Huang, Leon, La Torre, Mostafavi, 2008).
    • Participation in after school programs has been associated with reduced drug use (Investing in Our Young People, University of Chicago, 2006) and criminal behavior (UCLA National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards and Student Testing, 2007).
    • After school programs can play an important role in encouraging physical activity and good dietary habits. Participation in after school programs has been associated with positive health outcomes, including reduced obesity (Mahoney, J., Lord, H., & Carryl, 2005).
    • Working families and businesses also derive benefits from after school programs that ensure that youth have a safe place to go while parents are at work. Parents concerned about their children’s after school care miss an average of eight days of work per year, and this decreased worker productivity costs businesses up to $300 billion annually (Brandeis University, Community, Families and Work Program, 2004 and Catalyst & Brandeis University, 2006).
