Ireland Mission Trips: Sports Ministry

There is no greater poverty in the world than gospel destitution, and much like anywhere else in the world, young people in Ireland are in NEED of Jesus.

There is a lot of political baggage that caused a major divide among the population on the island of Ireland that separated Unionists/Loyalists (predominantly Protestant who want to remain part of the UK) and Republicans (predominantly Catholic who want to reunite as the Republic of Ireland). Even today, many live in segregation within their own communities (divided by “Peace Walls”), attend their own schools, have their own churches, and their own businesses.

Ireland has a young population by European standards, with 21% under age 15 and 50% of the population under 30 years old. Their spiritual need is underlined by the rapid increase of serious social issues: broken families, alcoholism, drug addiction, sectarian violence, depression, suicide, and post-Christian attitudes.

Despite the region’s deep religious heritage, the youth culture has become turned off by misconceptions of Christianity. Many young people have lived under the paradigm that religion breeds hate. This has created a spiritual destitution leaving the next generation searching for a better way of life. Fresh expressions of the Gospel can help young people see that love is the essence of Christianity, and that Jesus can heal people of their spiritual animosity.

Opportunities for missions include sports ministry, children’s ministry, youth ministry, recovery ministry, and special needs ministries.

“Before the first year at camp, it was the lowest part of my life. I had lost my mother and sister in a tragic car wreck. I was being bullied at school and was planning to commit suicide when I received an invitation with a scholarship to attend Breakaway camp. I decided to put off the suicide plan and attend camp. It was the best decision I ever made. I gave my life to Jesus at camp and then Breakaway helped me get involved with a local church. My life still has ups and downs but I know now that God has me no matter what.”
