Over 10 years of fostering life-changing summer camps for underprivileged youth and children.

Every child should have the opportunity to go to camp… it’s an unforgettable adventure that has indelible impact for years to come!

Most of the young people attending these camps are from single parent families and economically disadvantaged households. We serve children of incarcerated parents, kids affected by domestic violence, foster children, inner city youth, orphans, kids dealing with postraumatic issues, and many other young people facing adversity in life. These children depend on scholarships from community partners to help send them to camp.

Camp serves as a safe place where every child can experience God’s love, life-giving community, and character building activities.

Breakaway camps have all the fun a child needs in a safe and nurturing environment (sports, recreation, swimming, rafting, hiking, dance, arts, film-making, team building activities, creative talent shows, and more!). These overnight excursions serve to increase a child’s resiliency characteristics, social skills, and spiritual development. It transcends hot dogs and campfires, providing a chance for kids to learn all about the life-changing message of Jesus and God’s unconditional love for them. These camps also build bridges of trust with young people which leads to year-round mentoring relationships.

Prisoners’ Children

There are 2.7 million children in the U.S. today who have a parent behind bars (1 in every 28 children). According to national statistics, close to 60% of these children are under the age of ten. In addition, children of prisoners are six times more likely to commit crimes than other children, a U.S. Senate report indicates.

Having a parent in jail or prison often leads to developmental regressions, acute traumatic stress reactions, impaired ability to overcome future trauma, as well as social and institutional stigma and shame. For most children of inmates, summer camp is only a dream. With mom or dad in prison, these kids are at a higher risk for drug abuse, violence, delinquency, and experiencing incarceration as well.

But it doesn’t have to end up that way – together, we can turn the tide of delinquency and make a difference!

What Your Gift Will Provide:

LIFE-CHANGING EXPERIENCES: Breakaway camps and retreats offer children a safe place where they can come and create memories for a lifetime, build vital gospel-centered relationships, and most eternally significant: hear and respond to the life-changing message of Jesus Christ!

ONGOING MENTORING: The mentoring relationships born at camp continue long after camp is over. Camp serves as a catalyst that fosters disciple-making movements in the lives of Breakaway kids and their families all year round. It is truly the gift that keeps on giving!

COMMUNITY BRIDGES: Camp is often the medium that builds restorative bridges into the lives of so many hurting families in our community. When children come home from a camp or retreat after having the adventure of a lifetime, families are typically open to receiving other ministries that Breakaway affords such as parenting resources, counseling, and church referral. Many broken families have been connected with local churches because of a seed that was planted at a summer camp. Your gift not only sends a kid on a life-changing childhood adventure, it can be instrumental in bringing entire families to Christ.
