Posted on August 25, 2010 by admin

A new program gives at-risk youth the opportunity to renovate themselves while renovating houses. By participating in the YouthBuild program, students who earn their GEDs will have easier access to the community college.

“In one year they (students) will have earned their GED and have their foot in the door (for college),” said Robin England, Blackfeet Housing liaison for the project. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for these kids.”

Matching fund helps provide more scholarships to summer camp! 0

Posted on May 26, 2010 by admin

The cost to send one prisoner’s child to camp for a full week this summer is $250, but thanks to a matching fund, your gift of $125 will enable an underprivileged child to receive a full scholarship to camp in July. Help us take advantage of this generous matching fund opportunity to help shape a “dream” this summer for an inmate’s child.

This means instead of the full $250 cost, you can help send one child to camp on a full scholarship for only $125.

20+ Ways to becoming a Great Mentor! 0

Posted on April 29, 2010 by admin

There are 14.6 million at-risk young people who need mentors; by volunteering as a youth mentor you can help one of them have a better life.

Mentoring makes a big difference: When kids enjoy a regular, positive activity with an adult over the course of a year, those kids are 46% less likely to begin using drugs, 27% less likely to begin using alcohol, and 52% less likely to skip school. This decreases drug-related suspensions, drug-related crime, and the number of babies born drug-affected.

Youth mentors are desperately needed to provide companionship and guidance to at-risk children. Family tragedy, divorce, and financial problems can leave a child lonely and longing for adult support. These children need help with their school work, a listening ear, and unwavering encouragement.

The 10 Commandments of Youthtopia 0

Posted on April 25, 2010 by admin

In the first-ever effort to understand the values, hopes and dreams of young people in Europe, MTV asked over 7,000 youths to imagine their ideal world and to consider brands as people and whether those ‘people’ would be welcome in their world –‘Youthtopia’.

One of the most interesting and revealing exercises in the research effort was the invitation to 100 European youths to challenge, criticise and collectively re-write ‘The 10 Commandments’.

The purpose of this exercise was to highlight and offer context to any generational shift in values revealed in the wider study.

Most interestingly, and key to the study’s overall tone, is that young Europeans believe that any set of commandments should be a list of ‘Do’s’ not ‘Don’ts’, something to offer more of a guiding steer than an imposing set of rules. This is evident in the final collectively agreed list; The 10 Commandments of Youth.

Here they are:

1. Have faith in yourself.
2. Respect your parents.
3. Be honest.
4. Take responsibility for your own life.
5. Live life to the fullest and be passionate.
6. Keep your promises.
7. Work hard to succeed but not to the detriment of others.
8. Be tolerant of others’ differences.
9. Be happy and optimistic, even in adversity.
10. Create, don’t destroy.

“Keep The Dream Alive” DVD video outreach resource 1

Posted on March 16, 2010 by admin

Abraham Wright was a standout at the University of Colorado. His childhood dream of playing professional football came true when he was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the 2007 NFL draft.

In this DVD outreach video, Wright talks about the thrill of living out a childhood dream amidst all the temptations and pressures that come with it. He stresses the most important reality was the “dream” that he discovered God had for him, not the dream he had made for himself.

Along with a personal testimony, Wright presents a clear explanation of the Gospel, making this video a great evangelistic tool and Super Bowl outreach resource.

Breakaway Outreach needs bowlers to come out and attend our Rock N’ Bowl fundraising events this spring to help send prisoners’ children and other at-risk youth to camp this summer. We have five locations to choose from in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Florida.

We need people to help us get word out about this incredible life-changing opportunity for underprivileged children.

To encourage that, we are giving away 5 FREE autographed copies of the Tony Dungy Perseverance In Pain DVD over the next few weeks.

The vision of this camp is to offer a whole week of overnight camping and spiritual retreat for prisoners’ kids as well as other high-risk children. Utilizing adventures in rafting, hiking, and other wilderness elements, the camp serves to increase children’s resiliency characteristics, team-building aptitude, social skills, and spiritual development.

There are over 1.5 million children of prisoners in the U.S. today. According to national statistics, 59 percent of these children are under the age of ten. In addition, children of prisoners are six times more likely to commit crimes than other children a U.S. Senate report indicates.

To Save A Life: life-changing outreach film for teens and their families 0

Posted on March 01, 2010 by admin

To Save A Life is a film that explores how a saving a life could be just a matter of opening our ears to the cries of those hurting through the dramatic story of Jake Taylor.

The film tells the story of Jake Taylor, a young man who has it all: a basketball scholarship, the ideal girlfriend, and the right friends. But faced with the demands of the in-crowd, Jake has written off his childhood best-friend, Roger. Isolated and mistreated, Roger finally takes his anger to the extreme when he shows up one day on campus with a gun.

Jakes last-ditch effort cant stop Roger. And the events which follow rock Jakes world. He begins to question everything. But most of all, he cant stop asking: Could I have saved Roger?

In his search for answers, Jake finds himself looking for the next Roger. He reaches out to geeks, losers, and loners. But crossing the strict high school caste lines threatens everything Jake values. And pushes him to answer the most important question of all: What do I want my life to be about?

This film doesnt shy away from the real struggles facing our teens.. It is rated PG-13 because it portrays some of these issues accurately: from teen sexuality, to abortion, to cutting, to drug and alcohol abuse, to suicide.

But because it does so, teens are praising this film for its realistic and relevant portrayal of their world and responding enthusiastically to its message. As teen author and speaker Zach Hunter comments: It conveys the raw emotions of life and the ups and downs of high schoolMy friends who have seen the film are already talking about it and encouraging others to go see it.

A must see for all teenagers and parents.
