Soldier Mentors Florida Juvenile Offender All The Way From Iraq

November 2005

Leslie with a few of the Iraqi Soldiers who went on to fight on the front lines in Tal Afar. One Iraqi Soldier told Leslie, “I will fight for my country.”

First Sergeant Leslie Peterson has been mentoring a female juvenile offender in Florida all the way from Iraq through Breakaway’s pen-pal correspondence program. She has been an inspiration to Tabetha, the teenage girl she is mentoring, but she says that Tabetha has also been an inspiration to her on the battlefield.

Leslie says that being a soldier in the military for the past eighteen years has truly been a wonderful experience for her. Leslie came from a family of fifteen and was no stranger to youthful mischief. But her life took on a new meaning when she gave her heart to Christ on August 26, 1994. She is currently serving in the U.S. Army in Baghdad, Iraq. She’s also in her fourth year of college with Troy State University majoring in Criminal Justice with a focus on juveniles.

When Leslie returns to the states, she wants to start up a mentoring program for teenage girls in her home state of South Carolina. We ask you to be in prayer for Leslie and Tabetha.
