Breakaway Reaches Out To New York City
Youths During 9/11 Aftermath
January 2002
Breakaway Outreach provided evangelistic services in New York
City juvenile offender institutions during the aftermath
of 9/11. Many of the kids and staff in these facilities
knew someone who had died in the tragedy.
In each institution, Christian rap artist
Sean Slaughter delivered the life-changing message of Jesus
Christ in a language that street kids could understand through
hip hop music.
Former All-American basketball player Regi
Harris also shared his testimony with New York City youth
offenders. He told them how drugs took him from being an
All-American athlete to being an inmate for the Florida
Department of Corrections. Regi spoke straight to the kids
about the pain he put his parents through and the pain he
suffered when they passed away while he was locked up.
Other testimonies included a Christian mother
who has a son who is locked up. She shared from a mother’s
perspective the brokenness and devastation that families
experience when kids get into trouble.
Evangelists Jimmy Larche and James Roberts
preached the simple message of God's salvation and over
180 young people made professions of faith in Christ.
The crusade concluded with a training workshop
for local church volunteers to be equipped for continued
discipleship programs within these facilities.
